We are just about to be through the season of Lent for 2017. The 40 days prior to Easter is referred to as Lent. The origin of the season comes from Latin celebration that actually meant 40 fours. In the early church it referred to the 40 hour fast before the Easter celebration. This was a typical time to baptize and the fast was in preparation. Later on, the period was extended to six days and eventually to include the time period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Eve. The word Lent comes from a Germanic word for Spring, “Lencten”.

No matter what we call it, Lent is a time for worship, fasting, prayer, giving to charity, studying God’s word and working to be closer to God. It’s a time to turn your heart and mind to Christ and grow in your walk with the Lord. Fasting usually brings to mind the depriving of food, but can be related to almost any habit, activity or object. The time and energy expended on the activity is to be dedicated to service in Jesus name, study of God’s word or similar activity.

At the Tallula Christian Church we will worship the Lord at services each Sunday at 10:30 am and Sunday school at 9:30 am. On Thursday April 13 we will worship with a Maundy Thursday candlelight meal and service. Easter Morning we meet at our regular time for worship followed by an egg hunt for the kids.

Come visit with us, we are easy to find, just three block north of Historic downtown Tallula at 311 North Yates. Make a point to worship the Lord with us. I’m sure you’ll be glad you did or my name isn’t Dave Poeschel, Pastor and as I always say, “We’ll leave the light on for you, the light of Christ.”
